I'm still keeping the mix for my portfolio, at least I'll have gotten something out of it.

Just another thought - if it's uploaded to soundcloud and set not to be downloadable there's not much that can be done, even with a complete mix.

Nothing is not downloadable  ;D

Once you hear it,  you can capture it with Audacity, Soundflower or countless others:

http://stuff24.de/blog/howto-download-soundcloud/
http://www.soundcloud-download.com/

Found those ones in less than 5 seconds  ;)
Once you posted a full song by any mean, it is downloadable for anyone who really want to.
Soundcloud, like any other sharing company, simply lie when they pretend you can't download a song when it is locked.
You want, you can.

Like Picasa/Google or Facebook pretend you can't steal a photo because there is no download option.
They probably don't know what a screen capture is :D
You press a key, go into any picture soft and do paste...and you get your photo. It is even integrated in you OS, no additional software.

Thats' why serious companies use watermarking on their pictures, audio demos and videos.
Once it is on the net, you don't get anymore control.

May be being a computer tech for 20 years helped me realize this point  ;)

And you are right about portfolio. This is what i'm going to do with some remixes i've done.
If you don't put any name :D
Because if you put a song as reference without their agreements, they can suit you if they search the web and find you.
No web search, no troubles.

That's the world we live in  ::)

To me, it is a good practice to not upload a full mix in those situations. For the two sides ;)
A simple way :
http://www.voxengo.com/product/beeper/

Do not use in beep mode because beeps are easily removed and harsh to the ear, but low noise or silence. Put this before your final limiter and you are set ;)

Another better solution is to create a phrase with your name/reference (easy with vocal synth or online)
http://www.zero2000.com/articles/top-5-free-text-to-speech-online-programs.html
And use a voice-over ducking compression on master track. Copy the phrase regularly and it will duck output saying your name over music, DJ like  :D
Like this :

Have fun !

Very Cool Ideas Brother :)

watermarking & limiting the length of the tracks to the first verse and chorus or 90 seconds or so.

Agreed. What I was wondering about was whether music ripped in this way would be of commercial quality. I'd have thought capturing audio which had already been processed by soundcloud or whoever wouldn't do much good to the sound.

You are plain right  ;)
It is worst than i thought...

http://help.soundcloud.com/customer/portal/topics/109407-uploading-transcoding
"Sometimes our transcoding system can create audio artifacts, as we transcode all tracks to 128 kbps mp3 for streaming playback."

Crappy 128kbps, like in the first days of mp3...shame on them ! At least they could use 192 VBR.
I would not use it for use, but other ppl...

It could be funny someone contact you later to get the original uncompressed for an album ;)

PS :  an update : they posted on ultimate metal too : http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/merch-stand/859788-album-mixing-offer-rock-nickelback-style-p.html
And no response of course...
You can get their soundcloud on the first post :

So I guess this is officially over now  ???

Do we move this into the normal mixoff section so we can comment on other mixes, or do we just leave it here? It's still a good mixing exercise, even though nobody was chosen... a shame really, those were some good recordings and songs, I think most would have liked mixing these 8 tracks, I sure would have  ;D

I think we should move on. Almost one month and a half and no answer from original poster.
Lesson learned. We should define the new rule for Audition Mixoff section. Something like this:

------------------------------
* Please upload your audition mix no longer than 90 secs. Optional you might want to insert a watermarking. We recommend the free Voxengo Beep plugin:
http://www.voxengo.com/product/beeper/
------------------------------

I agree we could comment now about our mixes and get some constructive criticism as part of this mixing exercise.

Greetings.

Agreed, feel free to comment on mixes, as usual. I'll leave it here, for now, as it wasn't really posted as a free-for-all mixoff, as the usual ones are.

But offering constructive criticism is what we're here for, so go for it!

Yeah lesson learned. I'm re-posting my mix here since this thread has gotten pretty long. All comments welcome!
