I think a mastering section is a great idea.

I always give a little "pre-mastering" touch to the mixes, but only to make sure they're peaking at -0.3dB, I'm not trying to pump or squash the dynamics.

ALL mixes should be mastered, well they have to be actually, if they're going on a CD. Having said that, the truth is that the better a mix is, the less preparation/alteration it needs.

Adding a few plugs on master and mixing into them instead of adding them at the end can work as well.
