Mix Critiques and Feedback / Re: Ruff mix, I need some suggestions...
« on: February 10, 2012, 08:30:44 PM »
Overall the mix is fairly decent.  The biggest critique I could give would be the guitar needs some work.  Most of the synth is wide, which sounds great, while the vocals and guitar are very mono.  I bet if you either delayed the left or right by a few samples, or if you processed the guitar differently for the left/right the vocals would push through better.  Also the guitar seems kinda thin when its just the synth and guitar, like after the first vocal part.

I hope that helps.

Are you looking for arrangement and/or mixing feedback?

Compositionally I think this piece is great.  It has a great riff, some interesting sound designs to it and some great vocal aesthetics.

Mix-wiz I aggree that the guitars should be panned a little wider.  Also the vocals are a little unintelligible especially in the beginning, they either need a little more compression with a level boost and/or the guitar needs to be cut around the same freq range.  It's a hair muddy between 600-900 Hz.

Also, because it's a mp3 the quality of the piece is compromised making some of our notes possibly moot.  I would recommend using soundcloud.com, there you can post pieces you create at whatever quality you want and the UI for others to listen to it is great.

... though I believe it requires that you have the same setup on all the systems that are accessing the project....

Actually you dont.  I've been on the beta for a few months now and it's pretty hands free.  After speaking with Mike Gitig it looks like they will be improving the scanner algorithm and it will learn from your saving habits.

A few more postings including a free ear training program I built and I interviewed Gobbler.  If you dont know about this program it's just like dropbox but for your DAW.  Every engineer gotta have this.

Ya I was thinking about varying the beat some as well, you've just hit the nail on the head for me.

I was intentionally going over the top with the autotune to make the piece kinda ridiculous, with that in mind is it still too much?

HEy everyone, check out this mix and let me know what you think.  Especially the final chorus that has a lot of vocals.

I think it could also be informative to listen to others work and read what people say about it.  I'm hoping for more then "i like it" or "it sounds like crap".  But if people had constructive and specific things to say about the mix avoid from the arrangement, that'd be worth having.

Would anyone else find this useful?

It would be awesome is there was a section where we could post a completed, or nearly completed, mix and have others listen and comment on it.  I would love to be able to post some of my mixes and get some constructive criticism and advice from fellow engineers.

Hahaha.  Ya I want to try to stay engaged with it.  I already have a list of 8 topics I want to talk about and my plan is to never have that list shorter than 2.

Also I am going to try to get other audio people post blogs of similar topics.  I dont want it to be exclusively from my perspective
