Mixing Talk / Re: Mixing stereo or mono ?
« on: October 12, 2014, 04:53:45 PM »
Split the tracks to mono and ditch the superflous ones.
Mono sounds rendered in stereo is no problem at all as was already mentioned but you have to bear in mind that it will double the processing power needed for each plugin you insert on those tracks

^Pretty much like he said.

When somebody gives me stereo tracks that are actually mono, I simply split them and delete the other one.

Probably good idea to pan both the OHs and guitars fully to sides to create some width.

You'll probably want to compress the bass DI really hard in order to blend it well with the rest of the band, Di basses pop out really easily out of these kind of recording where everything's bleeding into one another but none to the bass.

Leakage (and handling it) on the vocal mics will determine the quality of the final recording. Your vocal mics are essentially also drum mics so don't start mixing the drums with the vocal mics muted.

Since this is in the tech talk, I assume we can talk about our experiences with other people mastering our mixes.

I once had one of my tracks mastered by one of the big mastering houses here in Finland. The results were awful. We made one revision, which was less worse than the final mix provided until I decided to master the whole project myself. Sometimes people forget that mastering can actually make everything sound worse. Weakest link is weakest link.

Mixing Talk / Re: Mixing a "punchy" orchestra sound
« on: June 10, 2014, 04:06:20 PM »
I think the orchestra sounds just fine (perhaps there a bit too much verb on them IMO). I feel many of the other elements aren't in their place, the drums are lacking bottom end oomph and you could easily get away with more compression on the vocals (perhaps a bit of distortion à la Spike Stent to keep them on top of the mix). As a learning process you probably ought to try to match the sonics of Hurts' first album Happiness (which is better sounding than their second effort, more punchier). Bright vocals, punchy drums and wide orchestration. Rarely it's the orchestra itself that sounds punchy per se but many of the other elements in a cinematic pop song.

My personal favorites in a "punchy orchestral" genre are Björk's Homogenic and Vespertine albums. In both albums it's the drums (more in the former) and especially the vocals (which have been given an intensive sound) which make that punchy sound IMO.

You seem to be correct. This one previews (with or without the quotations) just fine.

OK, I removed the ad management mod, and it seems better from here...

It seems disabling the ad management mod fixed the issue. As long as I keep the post short enough.

It seems disabling the ad management mod fixed the issue. The preview is working great here. Also when I replied to your PM my browser didnt hang when I sent the message. I wonder if its a certain version of AMM causing the hangs (you cant run this site without the ads of course).

When I add this red text to this message, preview stops working. Nothing to do with the color but the length of the post.

The "other" apostrophe ´ (which is the one you´d place on top of vowels) seems to work fine with preview.

There´s also a possibility that it´s not just the apo. My keyboard is Finnish, so my apo lies just next to enter button:

Ah, nope it´s not, the USA keyboard has the apo in the same place.

I´m having no troubles whatsoever previewing this post.

Let's see.

Ten minutes and counting when trying to preview the above text. But if it cannot be fixed, it's not the end of the world; one can always edit a submitted post if there's a typo :)

Forum Problems / Fetching Preview Slow
« on: June 04, 2014, 02:17:32 PM »
Hello. The preview fetching has been really, really slow for me. When the new version of the forum came out (I instantly switched to the theme resembling the older one) first it only took few minutes to fetch the preview but lately the preview fetching has took longer than my lunch breaks (as a matter of fact so long that I haven't bothered to wait anymore)! Less than a week ago I deleted my cookies in order to get the PMs work for me (didn't help, the messages get sent but my browser seems to hang and the only way of me knowing the message was sent is to reload the site and chock my outbox).

There's a possibility that the issue is my oldish browser: I'm running OSX 10.6.8 with Safari 5.1.10 (the last one which work with SL)
