Mixing Talk / Re: Reverb: how much is too much?
« on: November 24, 2012, 11:11:49 PM »
I think the trick is to EQ the reverb return so the effect doesn't wash everything out.  You can really tuck the reverb in behind the mix so it's not obvious but it's obvious when you mute it.

Also it can take quite a while to find the right reverb, so I spend a good while auditioning various options.

The Control Room / Re: What is your control room?
« on: November 03, 2012, 04:55:27 PM »
Well I'm in the corner of a double garage, I think the most important thing is the room treatment

I have an Auralex Room Kit plus 5 homemade rockwool broadband absorbers, plus a measurement mike and some software called Room EQ Wizard so I know the room is as probably as good as I can get it on a budget.

I use a Core I5, 4gb, 1TB PC

Adam A7's on stands & Silentpeaks  , an Avantone Mixcube,  Presonus Faderprt , Focusrite Liquidmix and a FocusritePro24 DSP  and a bunch of plugins that I seem to use less and less the more I learn.  :o

Hmm, not a fan of that mix John - It sounds really over-processed to my ears, quite unnatural. Just my opinion though... ::)

We'll see what the others think  ;D

I think you need to clear some more space for the vocal by cutting the less important tracks that are masking it, also the vocal seems to need quite a bit of work in terms of micro-automation , timing adjustments and also the backing vocals to be tightened up with the lead.

I don't think just turning it up will help as it it throw the balance off on the bigger speakers. normally I'd try and get the best balance using a small monitor speaker as well as bigger ones. I suspect some of that stuff you scooped out is needed to help it translate. distortion can be useful if there's no harmonics in the source recording but better used in a support role not replacement.

On that mix I posted, I used the ones Cosmic Dolphin sent me, which I assume are the original tracks.

Yep, I just forwarded you the link

John , hate to be down on your mix after you helped get mine to a better place ... Was it meant to sound this way or have you bypassed the 2 buss as it sounds like I'm listening to the FX returns on their own.  ???
