Title: GearFest Mixing Contest - deadline june 1st 2013
Post by: Juanra Ortiz on April 22, 2013, 06:35:00 PM
Hi guys
I just read about a new mixing contest. It is a really short multi-track session recording live at the GearFest.
Follow this link and register to get the files. You will also get a free coupon code for free pureMix videos tutorials about tracking this whole session with Fab Dupont (really interesting approach, and very funny btw with Fab humor).

http://www.puremix.net/gearfestmixingcontest

Things for consider in this mix:
1. Session was not tracking with metronome. Tempo change all the time between 102 to 110 BPM. Maybe you need to insert a lot of tempo changes in your DAW to sync your time-based FX, or just leave it plain.
2. Drums have 4 mics: 1 kick, 1 snare, 2 OHs.
3. Bass guitar was tracking with 1 DI and 1 mic amp.
4. Guitar was tracking with 1 mic.
5. Vocal was getting as an overdub, after one vocal scratch or guide track.
6. Genre is classic rock with nice female vocal by Liza Colby.
7. Deadline for mix submissions is june 1st 2013.
8. Issues you will face with this mixing will be bleeding, as it is a live recording session (maybe can be used in advantage to glue the track), width, because it has really only 1 melodic instrument (the guitar), vocal dynamics, kick cutting right through, and overhall tone.
9. The 16 best mix winners will be awarded with amazing prizes by Focal, Presonus, Dangerous Music, pureMix tutorials and more.

I started mixing this morning and almost finish it. It is really a simple session. Good luck guys. Have fun.

I grabbed the tracks and stated playing with it. Great performance. Biggest issue I'm seeing is vocal dynamics. Seems like that's where most of my time will be going.

Well over 100 entries already...

They also create a group in soundcloud for uploading your mix.

The drums are tough on this as there is no seperate Hat or tom mics, just the kick, snare and two overheads.

Brilliant Track and really interesting to watch the vids on the recording of the song. Here is my take, I think it needs more presence however I am not sure if that is something that could be sorted during Mastering/ Post Mastering process?

Where's the low end on the bass? Sounds to me like you're working in a room with some issue. You've thinned everything out, especially the guitar. The lttle crackle distortion on the guitar is more apparent than it is in the raw.

I removed the low end of the bass because I wanted the frequency range to be used by the kick, I may have over done it though, but I didn't think by much. The room I am working in is my bedroom and is un treated and I have my pc base station sat right by me chuffing out all the fan noise you can ever want!! I would more than agree with you that my room has issues however I believe I should be able to adapt and I don't see that as being the main cause of any issues. The PC noise, yes maybe but not so much the room. Not sure I understand what you mean by saying that I thinned everything out? can you elaborate for me mate? Genuinely I need to learn so as hard as it is for me to ask (above me going off and thinking I am the next CLA!!) Have I over saturated the guitar? I quite liked the guitar tone, it was a bit abraisvive and I had to soften it a bit. I took out some of the 600hz range from the whole mix when I ran it through my ML-9000, could this be the cause of the "thinnning effect"?

This was a fun mix, - trackwise very straightforward, yet tricky to get right nonetheless.  Here's my effort:

Mix was one thing but to document your work and gear you used took time.

That's why I mixed it and didn't bother to document and upload. It was fun, though.

Well, to be honest, this will dramatically decrease you chances of winning  :P
In the beginning I thought I'd have a relatively good chance of winning something. I mean 16 prizes are a lot... many mixes ARE crap... but now with 900 and counting, basic arithmetics says chances are getting somewhat slim  ;D
But if they take all mixes with disabled download or without documentation out of the competition, half of the competitors might just disappear.  ;D ;D

It has been a WHILE since I've mixed something like this that's both live and with so few tracks. Getting the toms to speak and the stereo image to happen the way I wanted were probably the biggest challenges for me. Didn't hurt that everyone involved played and sang their asses off either. Great stuff
Loved doing this, I'd completely forgotten about this place and I'm very glad I stumbled onto it again.

not sure if I can attach an mp3 from my phone?

If this works, it's an early-ish version before I wrestled with the drums. It's really just a rough.  I don't have the project files any more, though, so it is what it is.  Gives you a good idea where I was headed, anyways.

Edit: apparently you can't upload files via tapatalk. I'll put a link up a little later.
Edit2: Here's the soundcloud -

Very nice, well balanced. My only criticism is the changing of the stereo field with the guitar feels a little unnatural for this type of track (completely subjective) I like it  ;D

Thank you. I guess I'm just really over particular sometimes. To me, the kick is too mushy, the snare is too clicky, and in this version I hadn't found the toms yet. And it's over compressed on the 2 bus. Lol.

I haven't decided if I'm going to finish this one. There's paid work in front of me demanding time, and there's other mixes I'm sure that are more "technically correct" than mine, which was the biggest criteria I saw.

If I get a chance tonight, I'm going to try to listen to some of the ones here...

Felt like it was intentional, felt kinda 70s, considering the music it seemed appropriate :)

Is usage of drum samples allowed? I only used a kick drum sample and made a balance between the original kick and the sample. Didn't do resampling on anything else.

They said you can master it if you want, but they're listening to them level matched, so don't feel required to.

Very cool, I was concerned about this because the very first comment I received was that it might be too loud for the contest. If they level match that's great, I didn't slam it so with or without the Slate it sounds pretty much identical :D

I didn't use any kind of physical equipment. Should I write which VST's did I use for this or just write that I used Cubase?

I like the 'liveness' of this mix. It really gives the sensation of a live performance. I also like that you have her dynamics in check without making her sound squashed. Wasn't crazy about the edited pause at the end, it kinda messed with the live aspect of it but that's subjective. Suggestions, she could use a little more chest voice and the bass could be a little more consistent, sometimes it kind of briefly disappears and then reappears. A little tighter on the compressor would take care of it. Overall, very nice mix 8)

I can appreciate where you were going with this but I'm not sure it's the correct approach to this song. When I mix someone who has stuff that I can listen to I make a point of checking out some of their stuff. With Liza's band the general theme I got was to sound like a band playing at the same time with what we do as mixers being as transparent as possible. You went for a specific sonic signature that makes them sound a little like she's overdubbed, separate.  The other thing is that everything is clustered in the middle, a small bit of panning would help to give a little more depth to the center of the mix. I'm basing my comments on what I perceive is the intent of the artist. There's nothing wrong with the sounds you got but they don't glue together as they should
