Title: Orchestral Mix - Critique Sorely Sought
Post by: xiaoan on April 06, 2013, 01:59:51 PM
Hi everyone, I just signed up at this forum today, and i'd really appreciate it if everyone who stops by tells me something about how my mix can improve. If you want to say something nice that's great too but i'm hoping to hear what went wrong instead.

If anyone has access to some kind of resource regarding mixing sampled orchestral works, that'd be great too!

Hi, I'm not very familiar with this style of music, but I have something to share.

First of all when mixing, you have to choose some reference material you can compare your mixes to. Load the songs in your project and constantly keep A/B'ing your mix vs others, and see yourself what you can improve.

Choose carefully the reference tracks, and every track should have a purpose: one you might like the low end, other the high end on the strings, another for ambience, etc..

To me it seems your mix is not very balanced in the high mids, some instruments are too harsh. Work the 2kHz-6kHz area.

Hope that helps

I agree with the comment on 2-6kHz harshness.  Otherwise very cool!
