One of my favorite amp sims is a freeware one: California Sun, great on DI bass!

http://www.auraplug.com/site/?q=freetortion-series

(there are several good amp sims here, for various purposes..)

Camel Crusher is a good free compresor: http://www.camelaudio.com/camelcrusher.php

As is Rough Rider: http://www.audiodamage.com/downloads/product.php?pid=ADF002

Haven't really tried this one yet: http://vladgsound.wordpress.com/plugins/molot/

Molot looks interesting, not transparent (none of these are!)

I'm sure I can think of more!

i think one of the best freeware comes from this

http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/

Density is a great compressor..
ThrillseekerLA is my goto pop compressor.. it suits me better than Rcomp
Epic verb is epic!
and BootEQ, nice for colouring and brightening the sound

dont forget the ferric TDS :D

my favorite distortion - http://rhythminmind.net/STN/?p=165

some of the best freeware plugs ever - http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/downloads/
most notable are epicVerb, FerricTDS, NastyDLA.  I'm sure they are all great, those are just the ones I used.

edit:  didn't notice someone already posted about varietyofsound.  add those to the list.  good plugs.

LePou makes nice amp sims - http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/
but I like LeCab2 better than his other stuff.  Lightweight impulse verb for use after amp sims. Link: http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/2010/12/lecab2-vst-for-windows.html

TSE Audio too.  http://www.theserinaexperiment.net/website/software.htm
TSE X30 is the best amp cab I've found including commercial plugs.  TSE 808 is fantastic as well (tube screamer pedal sim).

Here's another freebie, that I really like. I posted it in another thread, but you can add it here, if you like:
http://dsp.sonimus.com/products/soneq/

Has a sort of analogue eq vibe, the saturation can be nice, too.

Awesome, wish it were RTAS so I could try it out. Thanks

Getting caught up now  with updating what's listed above

Tried this one today, and found it really nice on a lead vocal: http://vladgsound.wordpress.com/plugins/limiter6/

It's designated for mastering, but I haven't tried it on mixbuss duties. On vocals, though it did a great job of bringing a vocal forward and evening it out, without getting sibilant. Donationware, but no limits on freebie use.

The "clipper" sounds really interesting. This is the first time I've come across of an actual clipper plugin.

Yeah, it's gotten some really good reviews over at GS in the mastering forum, but I haven't used it in that context. Worked great on vocals, if you want a super up front sound. Be sure to edit out any pops, licked lips, etc, or they become really loud!

I just tried that thing on a master and it works! Sounds slightly less mushy than normal digital clipping (how?), and the low end retains
little bit more punchiness. Wow.

Thanks to everyone who helped with this list so far. I have a ton of new plugins to try (And just made any upcoming mixes that much harder....).

I have been playing with this guys VST plugins since 2005 or so, when I stumbled across the NyquistEq (back when all I had was a dell with a sound blaster and a Casio digital synth from the 80's).

Here is the link. http://magnus.smartelectronix.com/ (http://magnus.smartelectronix.com/)

Hey guys, this guy http://sirelliot.wordpress.com/category/main-page/vst-plug-ins/ makes some amazing free stuff that get's used everyday along with my expensive stuff.
This other one makes very good verbs and an excellent transparent eq http://www.signaldust.com/
Enjoy
-Just remembered this http://j1000.in.rs/ Not sure if you've heard of him
First plug he made was a freeware version of the Portico, later he added filters to it. All the stuff he makes sounds great

They really are a secret weapon aren't they? Hardly anyones heard of these plug-ins - which is a real shame - but they sound very, very good and very low cpu too. I use Little Black Box, SL-1 and the 31 band eq all the time.
