Title: Where To Host Files
Post by: JohnSuitcase on February 13, 2011, 03:36:28 AM
While you can host files in loads of places, our favorite at this time is Dropbox.com (http://db.tt/Tufb50U).

You get 2 gigs of space, and the interface is simple and easy to use.

Visit the site, create a simple account, and you can upload files.

Be sure to place any files into the 'Public' folder to share them on this forum.

Once your file is uploaded, mouse over the name of the file. A small arrow will appear, which reveals a menu. Click on 'Copy Public Link.' Click the "Copy Link to Clipboard' button. Now, return to the forum, and click the icon to 'Insert Hyperlink.' Paste your link, and you're done!

Other good options include http://soundcloud.com/ (http://soundcloud.com/) (for mixes) and http://www.filedropper.com/ (http://www.filedropper.com/).

You can also attach mixes to your post, though there's a 10 meg limit, and the files will download to the user's computer, rather than play in the browser. Also, guests won't see your attached files at all!

Should we post mixoffs as .RAR or .ZIP? I don't know how many people are compatible with .RARs so I was wondering. I personally would rather download .RARs due to their size but I know not everyone can open .RARs.

I think most people can figure out how to unpack RAR files, but you could include a link to any freeware software required.

I already have a (paid) dropbox account, and it's quite full. I could make a free one, although switching back and forth would be a pain.

May I suggest uploading mixes to 192kbps mp3?
The quality is good and the files are not too big.

I use Google Drive/Docs.

Make sure to make link public when sharing.

I use Google Drive to send large files to other people through Gmail/Email as well as posting links for public forums.

Sign in with your Gmail account to use Drive.
